Spring Trend Watch: Bright, Bold Print Dresses

You can't just have a simple printed dress this season. It needs to be saturated in bright colors and bold print! This is not the time for you and your wardrobe to be "mousey"! Seeing all the bold and colorful clothes everywhere makes me slightly upset that my mom didn't save all her clothes from the 60s and 70s. I am not sure if I want to have children, but just in case I do, I have decided to save all my clothes from now so my future fashion offsprings won't be forced to start from scratch.

Anyway, here are a couple of dresses that are drenching with bright and beautiful prints!

FIRST ROW: Tisha Dress, $39.50, Delia's; Multi Rose Cami Dress, $59, Hot Kiss; Jully Kang Empire Dilman Dress, $150, BlueBee; SECOND ROW: Surplice Dress, $24.50, Wet Seal; Tibi Animal Paisley Dress, $330, BlueBee; Stripe Surplice Dress, $19.50, Wet Seal

Oscars '07

The Oscars are over as well as this award season. Let's be real, the Soul Train awards don't count!! Anyway, I kind of enjoyed this year's ceremony compared to previous years, but in the end still nothing worth while! However, the fashion was not as thrilling as others and I don't feel like showing a bunch of pictures. Therefore, I am gonna give you my favorite and most disappointing!

Best Dressed

I loved this dress and it was so elegant and the skirt is so gorgeous! Her hair and make-up is sleek and chic, which is perfect for the dress. Perfect look for the occcasion! I was actually shocked it was Versace. I initially thought it was Cavalli or Chanel, but what do I know!

Most Disappointing

This is a prime example of how the wrong accesories can ruin a look. The Oscar de la Renta dress is gorgeous. Hell, I wish I had it, but that futuristic cropped jacket she is wearing is too much. I am sure she wore it because she wanted to hide her arms, like I do, but there had to be a better option. It was just a slight touch too much! However, that little gold man she won made her one of the best accesorized at the end of the evening!

Weekend Overload: Oscars, baby!

This weekend sneaked up on me so quickly. I think I lost track of the days, because of the most gorgeous weather that a sandal lover like myself can ask for!! The temperature here Memphis was in the upper 60s and low 70s all week and just a slight sprinkle of rain earlier in the week. Just lovely! I plan to almost live outside this weekend, because its almost open toe season, chicas!

However, I will be in the house in front of the TV Sunday night to catch the Oscars so I can see J-Hud and Eddie Murphy grab those little muscular gold men! Plus, "The Dreams" are performing and you already know Bee is gonna break out all the high notes and unwanted runs, so she can get that spotlight more on her than Jen! I still can't wait!

A live a boring life!

A.B.S by Allen Schwartz Charmeuse Dress

That is the first thing that popped into my mind when I first saw this dress. It's so beautiful and mesmerizing and like most ABS dresses, the price is to die for!

However, where on God's beautiful earth would I wear this to? Maybe when I check the mail, which will more than likely contain some of my neighbors mail? Crappy mailman. When I go take out the trash as I try to avoid the cracks in the asphalt? Maybe, when I walk to my apartment's office to drop off my rent check while burning a few calories? Or  maybe, just maybe, to chase the ice cream truck when it starts to get hot in hopes that I get the best 'torpedo' pop on that whole white truck/van?

Since none of those will do, I guess I will continue to hope that my ticket to Sunday's Oscar and travel and lodge ticket will arrive tommorrow! Until then, I will just continue to marvel this dress from afar!

Come on Spring!!!

According to the wonderful Dave Brown on WMC 5 TV here in Memphis, the temperature is going to go up to the high 60s and low 70s all this week. Therefore, I took a break Saturday morning and did a quick lap through Macy's and found something for me to wear to celebrate the brief warmth.

Here is what I grabbed:

Zinc 'Nancy' Platform, $48.99, Macy's

They also make them in denim, but I have a slight hatred for denim shoes, no matter how chic they are! Gotta love hidden platforms, which is another spring trend watch for shoes.

I suggest that you ladies start building your personal spring collection. I always start with the shoes, it's my thing!

Unfortunately, there is a chance of rain today and tommorrow, but I will be in these on Thursday!

Weekend Overload: Hair and Hoops!

Yet, another weekend of sports for me! While I am partarking in the wonderful world of NBA All-Star weekend from the comfort of my own couch, I will also be dabbling in my love of multi-tasking!

I am a firm believer in the no-poo treatment(NO SHAMPOO!) for my hair. However, the other day I was tempted to shampoo my hair after catching about 3.5 billion shampoo commercials during a "Whose Wedding Is It Ayway" marathon on The Style Network and I am currently regretting it as I sit here typing with dry and possibly breaking hair.

Therefore, this weekend is all about moisturizing the situation on top of my head with the following:

Davines Nounou Nourishing Repairing Mask for Dry and Brittle Hair- The last time that I did a little late night experimenting with my hair that resulted in me questioning my intelligence and my hair product choices, this saved my life. I ordered this stuff on whim a few months before and never got around to using it, but this was the perfect time to crack it open. Its loaded with the oh so loveliness and moisturizing ingredient of olive butter and Vitamin E. After letting it marinate in my hair for 20 minutes and rinsing it out, I IMMEDIATELY noticed the softness and sheen that I love to see on my hair. When it comes to using hair products not neccesarily designed for women of color, I tend to double up the amount I use, which I do in this case!

Anyway, its a little pricey compared to my normal brown bottle of Pantene that stays nestled in the corner of my shower, but so worth it! I highly recommending this little splurge!

After all that, I plan to kick back with a cup of Crystal Light, some popcorn and a head full of S-Curl to enjoy my love of watching tall, shiny, muscular men run up and down a court showing off. The ideal of a lazy weekend! Besides, its FREEZING outside!

I remember them being a little longer than this one, but I don't care. I want this!

Sweet Feet

Although I will be spending V-Day in bed watching reruns of 'Take Home Chef', that doesn't mean that I can't give you some Valentine's Day fashion option.

I don't know about you, but I am sort of sick of seeing people wearing nothing but red from head to toe. I understand that it's Valentine's Day and red is the designated color of choice, but that doesn't mean you should drown yourself and those around you with it.

Instead opt to accessorize with red. Grab that little black dress and top it with a pair of sexy red pumps and keep it moving. Here are some fab options!

First Row: Balenciaga Raffia Sandal, $440, Bluefly; Marc Fisher 'Brazil' Pump, $79, Macy's; Dolce&Gabanna Red Patent Platforms, $468, Bluefly; Second Row: Guess 'Platon' Slingbacks, $79, Macy's; Sam Edelman 'Dixie' Wedges, $127, Revolove Clothing; Style&co. Mixed Reviews

After most award shows, I like to gush about the fashion considering the show itself sucks like Clearasil to a pimple.

However, this year's Grammy performances were pretty good, despite Beyonce doing another ballad to "prove" that she can sing. Child, we know you can sing, now dust off you Sasha wigs and mini dresses and break a hip dancing!! Golly!

In case I decide to give a pop quiz, my fav performance was Christina Aguilera doing "It's Man's World". Bravisimo. She killed that song, but that's not a shoicker when it comes to her voice.

Anyway, to stay with the theme of this blog, here are a couple of the looks that shimmied up the red carpet that I thought were mentionable:

Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson, Ciara, and Nicole Sherzinger

What the hell, here is a slightly better look!

The hair was horrible, but cute dress!

t'work it Miss Hudson!!

Adorable, but still age and award appropriate

Gorgeous face and dress, but the shoes ruin it the fierce factor!

Weekend Overload: Quick & Clean!

I actually plan on doing something constructive this weekend other than sniffing out clearance sections at Macy's, Dilliard', and Target for frugal and fabolous finds. I am gonna stay home and do a little spring cleaning despite the literally freezing weather outside, because my room and closet is an absolute mess. I am also going to try and get around to doing something to mi chica, E-Stylist. The links are sparse as well as the look. Therefore, don't be surprised if she has a new dress on by Monday. Also, don't be surprise if she doesn't! Have a clean and classy weekend!!

Spring Trend Watch: Little Yellow Dress

I'll be the first to admit that I am not really a fan of wearing dresses. I have always been sort of self-conscience when it comes to showing my legs, be it shorts, skirts, and/or dresses.

I am also not a big fan of yellow on me. I have undertones of yellow in my complexion and somewhere in my fashion and beauty obsessed mind, I don't think that I look great in the color.

Despite my observations for dresses and yellow, I don't just post trends I like, because there are some of you who are fortunate enough to wear anything. Apparently, you should definitely have a cute  little yellow dress in your spring wardrobe this season. Here are a handful of dresses to help get you into the yellow spirit of spring!

12th St by Cynthia Vincent Slip Dress in Mustard, $148, Blue Bee; D&G Printed Sunny babydoll Mini Dress, $495, Saks Fifth Avenue; Ruby Rox Princess Lace Dress, $78, Nordstrom; Roxy Knit Babydoll Dress w/ Eyelet Overlay, $54, Macy's; D&G Twill Bubble Mini Dress, $385, Saks Fifth Avenue

Yellow is a feared color among many, including myself! However, every complexion/skintone has a shade of yellow that fits them, muy perfecto. The lighter your skintone, the lighter your shade of yellow. FYI, mine is a deep, not dark, but a deep yellow. If you are not sure, try on a few shades and compare it to your skintone and which every color doesn't make you look flushed is the one for you.

A girl can dream, can't see?!

In response to yesterday's post about the fab fashion of old Hollywood, I have decided to reveal a website that I gaze at on a regular basis and dream that if I had the monetary means, I would buy everything in site.

DECADES INC is a famous vintage couture boutique located in L.A which is frequently visited by all the rich and famous to help in their ever growing closets. Jealous. DECADES mostly carries clothes from the 50s to the 70s, but occasionally you can find some later pieces. Anyway, I decided to let you all get the chance to gawk at some of the exquisite pieces they have. If you have the means, you can also purchase these pieces yourself.

Just to understand the fabolousness that this store has, here are a few select pieces that literally brought tears to my eyes and gasps to easily stumble out of my mouth.

1997 Hermes Crocodile Kelly Bag

1980s Red Chanel Quilted Handbag

Cartier 1970s Vermeil Necklace/Belt

Christian LaCroix s/s 1993 Goddess dress

For those of you who can't go to L.A to shop, you can purchase stuff via their lovely blog where they post the new additions to their store.

The glamour of Hollywoodland

Today the thriller and corruption filled movie Hollywoodland is released on DVD. Hollywoodland is based on the true story of Hollywood's most notorious unsolved mystery, the mysterious death of TV Superman actor George Reeves. Hollywoodland follows private investigator Lois Simo as he tries to piece together the last days of actor in hopes to find out what exactly happened, despite the fact that the police and studio heads want the case closed as a suicide.

Hollywoodland is a story of glamour, scandal, and corruption in 1950s Hollywood. Therefore, the fashion and style plays a huge hand in taking the veiwers back to that time. It also made me want reflect in how the look of 1950s Hollywood is once again being seen in magazines and on red carpets thanks to some of the current crop of today's Hollywood celebrities.

The glitz and glamour of 1950s Hollywood has recently been revitalized by many of today's Hollywood singers and startlets, such as Cate Blanchett, Scarlet Johanssen, and Christina Aguilera who have made the style of old Hollywood new again.

From the dazzling diamond jewelry to the long flowing gowns, the red carpets in this year's award season are overflowing with the style and grace of 1950s Hollywood.

One way that old Hollywood has lurked back into closets is via the faboulous dresses that reflect the era. A lot of gown designers have embraced the structure and fabrics that helped make that time one of the greatest staples in fashion history. Despite the resurgent of old hollywood-esque dress on the runways, some celebs opt to go vinatge. Actresses Chloe Sevigney and Annette Bening chose to wear vintage dresses to this year's Golden Globes ceremony. Even Renee Zelleweger wore vintage Chanel to the same ceremony.

Annette Bening in vintage Valentino @ Golden Globes

Chloe Sevigney in vintage YSL

Robin Tunnevas and Kathleen Robertson in Hollywoodland

Another way to take on the look of the 1950s hollywood is with the help of make-up and hair choices. One celeb who has taken this trend and sprinted with it is  Christina Aguilera. Although she does dress the era, her make-up and hair shows more of the reflection.

Christina is mostly seen wearing vibrant red lipstick on any occasion, be it to just go to the store or on stage of her current world tour.

Red was the lipstick color of choice back then, especially against a pale skin tone and subtle shadow heavily lined in black liner and multiple coats of mascara. Fortunately, since red lipstick is  currently one  of the hottest make-up trends, everyone can obtain the correct shade for their complextion. Topped with a head full of large soft curls, you too can have the same look.

While watching Hollywoodland, you can't help but to gawk at the style, grace and glamour that captured in every scene and see why its has resurged in fashion. It also doesn't hurt that the movie is really incredible and captivating! I've watched it twice this weekend, already! You should see it for yourself. Fierce fashion and a great story; what is there to want in a movie!

Hollywoodland stars Adrien Brody, Diane Lane, Ben Affleck, Bob Hoskins, Lois Smith, and Robin Tunney

View a clips from the movie here, here, and here!

Fall fashion according to Max Azria

New York Fall fashion week started this past Thursday and I have just started to browse through the various collections. The first collection I decided to ponder over is one of my favorite lines: BCBG Max Azria!

Every season there is a new neutral color that we should insert into our closets. Neutral colors consist of black, brown, grey, white, creams, and navy. This Fall, according to Max, the neutral for this season will be brown.

The main theme of the BCBG collection was all shades of browns, mostly on big, flirty dresses and accented with gold and bronze details. Needless to say, I loved it! Brown is my favorite color in the Fall and you all should know about my intense love for gold! To give you a sense of what I am rambling about, here are a couple of  visual examples.

Well, well, well! Superbowl Weekend is FINALLY here and I am more than estatic! If you can't tell by now, I am banking on the Colts to win it all! Both teams are great, but I think that Peyton and Marvin can take it back to Indy. Let me stop, because this is beginning to sound like a sports blog instead of a fashion and beauty blog! Weekend Music

Its been a minute since I have posted a music recommendation, but this is one that is LOOONNGG overdue! I don't know if its because BET J (the BEST alternative instead of having to sit through that crap on BET) are constantly playing her videos during "Soul Sessions" or the fact that the lovely people over at Direct TV are constantly showing a concert that she did in New York last year, but Corrine Bailey Rae's self-titled album was on constant rotation all this week.

Corrine, we are on first name terms, mixes the elements of jazz, soul, pop, and some blues with her melodic and distinctive voice that makes it more than easy to sit back, relax and listen to her entirely. Its such a lovely album. I have been singing 'Like A Star' all around the house! This album is a definite addition to your personal music collections.

Jersey Girl

While I was trying to come up with looks for the fashion loving divas on the go, I realized that I have never indulged in the beauty of certain fabrics that are perfect for those days when you want to look fierce and wrinkle-free. One fabric that is muy perfecto for that is jersey!

Jersey is such a versatile fabric, because it is a light weight with just enough stretch to allow you to play a fun and flirty game of hide-n-seek with your body! Its thin enough to layer, but also can give you just enough warmth to shut you up! However, the most incredible thing about jersey is that is practically "unwrinkable"(I'm pretty sure that is not a word, but I like it!) That means you can throw it in a weekend bag, leave it packed for hours, and when you pull it out it will still look perfect. Either way, its one fabric that you should keep stocked up in your closet.

Since I love you lovelies so much, here are a couple of pieces that would fit into any fashionistas closet!

Calvin Klein Matte Jersey Tie-Belt Dress, $159

Nina Ricci Lace and Jersey Top, $176.99, SALE

BLACK HISTORY: Madame CJ Walker

To celebrate Black History Month, I have decided to dedicate various post to women and maybe a couple of men who have stamped their name in the beauty and fashion industry.

The name that is at the top of most list, including my own, of these incredible people is Madame C.J Walker. Madame Walker is known for numerous accomplishments such as a human rights activist, but most importantly by becoming the first black female to become a self-made millionaire.

Way before Oprah Winfrey, there was Madame CJ Walker. She became a millionaire by making and selling her own hair care products. The first product that got her name out there was 'Madame Walker's Wonderful Hair Grower', which was a scalp conditioner and healing formula.

I could go on and on about the path she has paved for African American hair care, that is before it started being outsourced, but I will let you find out more for yourself!

To find out more about her legacy and products, visit The Official Website of Madame C.J Walker.
