Make-Up Brush Cleaners

One of my biggest struggles in life is definitely cleaning my make-up brushes. #TheStruggleIsReal

In my opinion, cleaning my make-up brushes is on the same level as cleaning my bathroom and getting my car maintenance: It’s a horrible chore, but I’m relieved when it’s all over.

Still, depending on the number of make-up brushes you have and how often you use them, this simple task can become very tedious. Also, you should take in mind your skin. If you have sensitive and/or prone to breakout, you might be more mindful of how clean your brushes are to use.

So, let’s begin at the basics of make-up brush cleaning.

How Often?

I have seen some “experts” say that you clean your make-up brushes at least once a month. Like I mentioned before, this is not the case for all and shouldn’t be, to be honest. When you use your make-up brushes, the intention is to apply make-up to your face. However, in the process, you are also transferring oils from your skin onto your brush..the same brush you will more than likely use the next day. This is very prevalent in brushes to apply face powders and powder brushes. The leftover powder on your brush can absorb the oils from your face and/or foundation and reside on your brush until you clean it. Kind of gross when you actually think about it, huh?

So, it would be awesome to was your brushes everyday. However, if your life is like mine, then everyday is not ideal or realistic. Therefore, you should look into spray brush cleaners. One of my favorites is Japonesque Makeup Brush Cleaner, which is very gentle on the brushes while also cleaning, conditioning, and disinfecting. Once you’re done using your brush, spray a couple of pumps of the cleanser on the bristles, twirl it on clean napkin or tissue and let it air dry and ready to use again the next day and or stretch you until you are ready to deep cleanse it.

How To Deep Cleanse Make-Up Brushes

There are a lot of products, tools, and methods out there to help you deep clean your brushes. Since I don’t use that much make-up nor wear it everyday and use the Japonesque spray, I tend to deep clean my make-up brushes every other week.

beautycleanser

When I do deep clean my brushes, the first thing I do is use a product to help break up all the make-up and oils deep within the brush. You can easily do this by massaging your brushes with a little olive oil, which works just as fine as most brush cleaners while also conditioning the bristles. However, to make sure my brushes are thoroughly clean, I’ve been using the solid blendercleanser by beautyblender. Not only only is it awesome at cleaning your beautyblender and other make-up sponges, but also your make-up brushes. All you have to do is wet your brush/sponge, swirl it a couple of times on the soap to create a lather, rinse, squeeze, and let air dry on the grid that comes with the cleaner. You can also use the drying grid to deep by placing it on top of the soap first and then swiping your brush back and forth to create a super lather. Definitely has been one of my favorite purchases in the past couple of months.

Although I do love the blendercleanser, I mostly use it for my sponges and the Japonesque spray cleaner to prepare them for the next time I apply make-up. However, there are times when I forget or use a brush for multiple uses or heavy product (i.e. foundation) and feel like the spray cleaner isn’t enough. So, I breakout the big gun: Cinema Secrets Make-Up Brush Cleaner.

This brush cleaner is a professional grade cleaner that I first heard about from make-up artist Priscilla Ono on her Snapchat. What is so awesome about this cleanser is not only does it clean the crap out of your brushes, conditions, and deodorizes, but it is a quick dry formula. Depending on the brush and how much cleanser you use, your brush will be dry in a matter of minutes. MINUTES!

If I could only buy and use one make-up brush cleanser for the rest of my life, this would be it. No doubt.

Weekly Skincare Routine

On Sunday, I have three things designated for the day. Sunday morning, I go to church. Sunday afternoon, I watch football or basketball (depending on the season, of course). Finally, Sunday night is designated to my weekly skincare routine, which focuses on thoroughly deep cleaning my skin.

boscia-makeup-breakup-oil

My Sunday night skincare routine starts off a lot my everyday nightly routine by first removing my makeup with a pump (or 2) of Boscia Makeup-Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil. Cleansing oils are one of the gentlest ways to remove makeup from your skin and this one from Boscia has been my favorite for years. It’s paraben and sulfate free and great for all skin types, including those with sensitive skin like me.

nip+fab-glycolic-fix-cleanser

After I have removed my makeup, I cleanse my skin with a foaming cleanser. The one I’m currently using is Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Cleanser. I bought these a few weeks ago on during an impromptu shopping stop in Ulta and I’m so happy I took a chance on this. This foaming  cleanser, which is very foaming, has 2% glycolic that is good for gently exfoliating and resurfacing the skin. One of my favorite ingredients in this cleanser is olive oil with adds an extra punch of moisture and softness to my skin, which is a major keep to combating this cold weather. Another great option is the Soft and Soothed Gentle Cleanser from Boots no 7 products. The difference here is that this cleanser is a lotion-based cleanser, rather than foam.

badescu-aloe-lotion

Time for toner and yes, it’s a Mario Badescu toner. What’s new? Well, I’m actually using a new (to me) formula of toner; Aloe Lotion. This toner is more gentle than the other toner, which is why I only use it on Sunday during this weekly deep cleanse. It’s very mild and great for combination, sensitive, and dry skin (including seasonally dry skin). This toner helps soothe, disinfect, and calms redness in your skin. I love it!

PMD-system

Time to break out the big guns; my PMD Personal Microderm kit. I’ve had this for a few years now and only recently reintroduced it back into my skin care routine to give myself weekly microderm treatments in the comfort of my own poorly lit bathroom. Over time, consistent treatments will help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, blemish marks, and enlarged pores, which are all concerns of mine. Plus, it helps smooth your skin and helps your make-up glide on and look more flawless. What more could you want.

deep-pore-detoxifying-clay-mask

Mask time! My go-to mask of the moment is the Clarisonic deep clay mask, which I recently included in my list of favorite clay beauty products. It’s just a nice final product to detoxify the my face.

pur_bright-serum

The serum I’ve been reaching for the past few weeks is Pur-Bright Ultra Skin Brightening Serum from Purlisse. The reason I’ve been using it more is because it’s done wonders on evening my skin tone and very hydrating.

Out of the moisturizing products on the market in my skincare/beauty stash, pure coconut oil is still holding on to the key to my heart and moisturized skin in the winter. I use it morning and night and still have yet to see even the smallest of dry patches on my skin.

Let’s Talk Multi-Masking

multi-masking-stained-couture

Face masks have been having an awesome couple of years. I must say, I play a very small part in the boom, because I’ve started quite the collection of various face masks over the past few months. I have a certain mask that I break out for those all over oily days, I have another mask when I feel the need to detoxify my skin, and countless of other masks that are designed for anti-aging, large pores, and calming of the skin.

Needless to say, I love face masks and try to use them as much as I can. There is just something so luxe about slathering your face with a nice and soothing mask….or masks.

Yes, wearing multiple masks (multi-masking) is one of the ‘it’ things to do when pampering your skin and has been for the past year. So, it’s safe to say that multi-masking is here to stay.

Here’s more about this customizable skincare process.

Benefits of Multi-Masking

Most people have multiple problems with different areas of their face. Personally, my t-zone and chin area is very oily, my cheek areas have enlarged pores, and my nose has a tendency to have occasional blackheads. So, I use a little bit of a different mask for each area. No need to waste product (and money) designed to oily skin on dry areas of your skin. Designated certain products will help you focus on multiple areas at the same time. Luckily, most masks require you to keep them on your face for the same amount time, which is usually between 15-25 minutes.

Easy Way To Multi-Mask

Since face masks and multi-masking are booming, a lot of skincare lines have caught on to creating and selling kits with various masks for different areas and/or treatments. So, if you are interested in trying multi-masking, I suggest you try one of these kits that contain different types of mask. That way, you can customize your mask without having to buy more than you need and/or discover, which products work for you and what doesn’t.

Double Cleansing Products and Duos

Isn’t it crazy how you can go years, maybe even decades, doing something one way only to find out you were doing it all wrong or not completely?

Well, that’s how I felt awhile back when I realized that I spent countless years complaining about my acne prone skin and having trouble finding a cleansing product and routine that actually worked when in all I was short-handing the process by only using one product to cleanse my face. All this time, I should have been using two face washing products instead the bare basics of one.

Now, I’m a firm believer in the double-cleansing movement.

What is “Double Cleansing”?

Simply put, it’s using 2 different facial cleansing products to clean your face. One of the popular and usual ways that some people do this is by using a make-up remover wipe to remove the first layer of make-up and then “washing” their face  with a regular “sudsy” face wash. That might be just enough for some, but the majority of us need to give our face more attention that when cleaning it or it will bite back with clogged pores and dull complexions.

There are countless of cleansing combos you can use to thoroughly wash your face and I’m sharing some note-worthy combos based on skincare needs. Keep reading to see if you can spot a combo for you.

No Makeup/ Morning Routine

no-makeup-light-makeup-cleansing-duo

You might think that double cleansing your skin isn’t necessary if you didn’t make-up or the first thing in the morning, but you might want to think again. Even though your face doesn’t have layers of make-up, a lot of dirt and germs can get on your skin and in your pores throughout the day and while you sleep. So, a gentle 1-2 combo of a Simple Cleansing Micellular water followed by Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser and a rinse of water would give your skin a gentle clean. Both of these products are super gentle and great for any and all skin types.

Light/ Natural Makeup

The look of natural makeup can easily be pulled off with light foundation, a little mascara, and simple lipstick or gloss. Therefore, a combination of a make-up wipe remover and oil-free face wash might be the way the go to thoroughly remove this make-up and clean you skin. Using Nuetrogena Make-Up Remover Wipes to remove your make-up is a great first step and follow it up with a cleanser like Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Milk, which is gentle and milky face wash take easily dissolves any leftover make-up, dirty, and even sunscreen.

Heavy/ Night Out Makeup

For those make-up addicts who love nothing more than a heavy smoky eyes, perfectly contoured skin, and no-budge liquid lipsticks, then a few make-up wipe and a gentle cleanser might not be the most effective way to remove your make-up and cleanse your face. A cleansing oil and foaming face wash is more ideal. Dermalogica Precleanse is one of the magical products ever. It gently deep cleanses your skin and the oil breaks down to remove skin impurities, sunscreen, and even waterproof makeup. Love a good glitter eyeshadow, this cleansing oil will dissolve and melt it off your face. After using your cleansing oil, follow it up with a foaming face wash such as Origins Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash. It’s great for dry and oily skin and doesn’t leave any residue.

Bi-Weekly Deep Cleanse

bi-weekly-deep-cleansing-duo

All proper skin care routines call for weekly deep cleansing that includes exfoliating it. There are countless of skin brushes that are great for deep cleaning your skin, including LUNA silicon facial brushes. There are LUNA facial brushes for all skin types, including for sensitive and combination skin. Use your facial brush with a deep cleanser, such as Juice Beauty Stem Cellular 2 -in-1 Cleanser. Not only does this product deep cleanse, but it also helps tone and hydrate your skin.

Do you double cleanse on a regular? If so, feel free to share your favorite combo below, because I love trying new skincare products.
