Weekend At Home: Pumpkin Decor and Design

pumpkins_decor_fall_2014

No matter where you live in the USA, you have to have driven past countless pumpkin patches and stands in the past couple of weeks. I haven’t stopped by one, yet. However, that is going to change this weekend, because October seems to be steamrolling and Halloween is going to creep up…fast.

Although pumpkins are mostly known for creating jack-o-lanterns for Halloween and some of the best pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving, they have become staples in home decor for fall. Over the years, the use of a simple of pumpkin your porch is so blah and boring. Now, pumpkins are adorned with paints, fabrics, and jewels to create pieces of art. Some pumpkin decor is so ornate that they are almost too beautiful to throw away and replace.

In my opinion, some of the prettiest pumpkin designs don’t involve carving of any cutting. Instead, opting for basic supplies from most craft stores can add more design. A simple layer of paint and some metal studs and jewels can create gorgeous and fancy pumpkins. Also, wrapping a thin layer of lace can be just as appealing and simple.

One of my favorite designs and uses for pumpkins is when they are used for table centerpieces. I love when they are painted in neutral shades of cream, gold, and white. It’s a simple idea that looks chic and elegant.

When I was a child, I loved making and decorating jack-o-lanterns with my mom and brother. However, I would’ve equally loved, if not a  little more, to paint pumpkins in to fun cartoon characters. I know my brother would have been super amped to have a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle pumpkin. Character painted pumpkins would look nice mingled with simple pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns on your porch.

WEEKEND AT HOME: Moroccan Poufs

Moroccan-Pouf-main

My sister and I recently decided that we would resign our lease for another year. In the past year, I haven’t done much, if any, changes in the home decor not even painting a wall or 10. However, that is about to change and one of the first rooms that’s going to get worked on is the living room.

In preparation for this task, I’ve been looking for home decor and style inspirations and one thing that has gotten my attention are the addition of Moroccan inspired poufs to decor designs.

Moroccan poufs are not only great for adding extra seating and character to your room, but they are also versatile for other functions.

One of the ways the ways to use a pouf is as an ottoman. Instead of the “traditional” fabric and legged ottoman, poufs are soft and comfortable. Plus, they can be stacked for a customized fit.

Another conventional use is to use them as additional table space. Add a vintage silver tray to create a bohemian feel to a dinner party or intimate get together.

Aside from the multiple uses, they are available in numerous colors and some textures. If you are looking to buy one or a few to add some new flair to your home decor, check out the sites below.

The Convert Vase

When it comes to home decor, I’m a sucker for conversation pieces, details, and functional vases and these Convert vases contains all of those characteristics.

The Convert Vase, which was inspired London’s diverse architecture, are a trio of architecturally inspired geometric vessels, each vase is constructed from a single sheet of stainless steel.

The sheet is folded and shaped by hand to create the cylindrical structure. The steel has a semi-matte finish with patterns embossed into the surface to create a soft tactile aesthetic from an otherwise hard industrial material. Clever locking and folding techniques are to form each sheet of steel into shape without using adhesives or soldering. This carefully engineered process creates a hand crafted design that is lightweight yet robust in structure.

The vases comes in small, medium and large and each vase comes with a waterproof container inside and packed in a sturdy presentation box, which would make it a great gift!

Weekend At Home: Flower Power

flow_maintain_tips

Give me any time or occasion to buy flowers for my home, I will do it! Actually, I’m one of those people that will buy flowers just because I’m having a bad day and/or Kroger has a very beautiful and affordable bouquet of bright flowers. I’m supposed to buy them…right? Well, I usually do and I’m totally fine with that. However, keeping “fresh” flowers can become a little to tedious and pricey.

Well, I have some quick tips (some you might already know or don’t) that will help you preserve the your flowers a little longer and stretch your floral budget. I can’t wait until I get to the financial point in my life where I have a “floral budget”! Is that even real? I don’t know, but I can’t wait to find out. Tip time!

  • Aspirin – This is an old tried and true tip. It is known and practiced of dropping one aspirin in your flower water to help expand the life span of your flowers by even up to 3-5 extra days, because they help kill the bacteria.
  • Prune the leaves – Before you place the stem in the water, remove the leaves. The leaves makes the water dirty and at times, can carry bacteria into the water that cuts the life span of your flowers dramatically.
  • Change The Water – This is kind of carrying on from the previous tip. Just like most living things, flowers need water, to flourish and sustain, and preferably clean water. So every other day or when you notice the water is getting dirty, empty the dirty water, rinse the vase, and add some fresh water (don’t forget the first tip above.)
  • Warm Water – Water is very important and not only does the water need to be clean, but also warm as the room temperature.
  • Trim – Every time you change your water, trim the stem a bit to help the flower to get more water.
  • Chill – Keep your flowers fresh by keep them out of heat and direct sunlight. Also, place them in the fridge overnight to keep them nice and cool.

These were just a few tips that I’ve heard about, tried, and found to be true. So, reference this list next time you have some fresh flowers to spruce up your home.
