WEEKEND AT HOME: Raised Bed Gardens

EMSCO_raised_garden_bed

The previous renter of the house I live had quite the green thumb and even had an entire garden in the backyard. Unfortunately, my sister and I don’t, but have aspirations to have some kind of garden. However, since it’s just the 2 of us and we both have full-time jobs, we don’t really have the time nor need for a large garden. So, a raised bed garden is the perfect option for us.

A raised bed garden is basically garden beds raised off of the ground… duh. They usually have wooden borders but can be made with brick, stones, or any other material that can traditional garden beds are formed. You can build one, however, I’m looking to buy a pre-made one like the one by EMSCO GROUP above from Lowe’s.

So, if you want a garden, but not sure if you want a traditional garden, then a raised garden might be for you. Here are some reasons to get a raised garden.

  • More Manageable – You can choose the size of your garden, which is perfect for single living and small families. No need for a huge garden for a small amount of people…unless you’re in a giving or selling mood.
  • Portable – If you’re renting a home or apartment, planting a large and traditional garden might not be feasible. So, a raised garden bed is easy to pick up in go, in the case that you move residents occasionally.
  • Easy to Control – Having a raised garden bed allows you to put various barriers to help prevent pest and weeds.
  • Visually Pleasing – Depending on the style you choose, it can add a nice decorative look to your outdoor area, especially if your garden is full of colorful flowers or produce.

So, if you are looking for a small project to do this weekend, look into creating or buying a raised garden.

WORK: Recharging On The Clock

FTBC_main

For me, the worst time of day is about 4 o’clock-ish on a workday.  That’s about the time the weight of the day starts taking its toll and my body realizes that we are only a couple of hours away from breaking free from our desk for the rest of the day. My body begins its own personal shutdown like a computer. Therefore, for the next couple of hours, I’m slowly turning off and closing down shop. Unfortunately, I still have a nice amount of work to finish before I leave that will not get completed if I’m working on 50% internal body battery.

So, if you are like me and find yourself feeling tired and/or drained about 2-3 hours before you are done with your workday, then you are not alone. It’s actually very popular feeling that most people feel, especially those who work in an office setting. So, I’ve gathered some tips and tricks that I use to help me avoid this feeling by recharging my internal battery and finishing the workday on a high note.

  • Drink Plenty of Water – Increased water intake is the cure for so many things, including headaches and more energy. Instead of starting a new pot of coffee, just sip on water and add some lemon, if possible. It’s not only refreshing and good for you, but it will add an instant bout of energy without the “crash” feeling that coffee and energy drinks can give you.
  • Brisk Walk – Sounds crazy, but the energy you exert on a brief walk can double and give you inspiration to do more. So, a quick little 15-20 minute walk around the parking lot and the fresh air will awaken and energize you.
  • Take a Quick Nap – I can’t lie, this is probably my favorite tip, because its the best. I usually go to my car, recline the seat back and take a 15-20 minute nap and I wake up feeling like I could build a building, because I have just that much energy from that simple nap. I actually got this tip from Arianna Huffington, founder of the Huffington Post. The Huffington Post offices even having napping room for employees to help them to re-energize and clear their mind. Trust, it’s so effective.

So, next time you are at work and the day is feeling too long to complete of feel yourself draining, try one or more of the above tips.

WORK: Current Status

Can you truly live a stylish and happy lifestyle without the monetary means to do so? Unless you “come from money” or hit the lottery or sugar daddy (which, is like hitting the lottery…I guess) then you need a job. Actually, I’m one of those people who firmly believe that you need a career, there’s a difference. I’m in this weird, gray area where I actually have a “career”, but I’m not happy, which is making it feel like a job. Boo.

“Work + Happy = Career

Work + Contentment = Job”

– Samida

For years after college, while freelancing as a graphic artist, I was looking for steady employment. I sent out countless resumes and went on more than a few interviews before someone took a chance on me and hired me to be a website manager for their online retail store. I was truly happy, although, I thought I was just content. I had a decent job, my own apartment and easily handled all of my bills with money to spare. You know, nothing too major.

However, After 3+ years at that job and advanced from just a part-time website manager to a full-time Website manager/ in-house graphic designer, I was burnt out and felt unappreciated. Therefore, I was on the hunt for a new career. I knew I wanted more; responsibility, experience, and knowledge. I already got at all I could at my comfortable eCommerce gig. So, it felt like it was the right time to carry my talents elsewhere.

After months of looking, I scored a “fabulous” job that would have me working in content development, social media marketing, eCommerce, and more. Pan to 3 years later ( My first day was May 16th, 2011) and my main job is content development, which sounds “fancy” to some, but mostly involves copy and pasting medical content into software systems and writing about medical products. Boo.

So, for the past few months I’ve been searching and begging any and all higher powers to guide me on the path to my next career destination and get me of this Office Space environment. I will admit, that I’ve been all over the place in what I want or think I want, but nothing really concrete. However, I do seem to be walking the line of creativity and entrepreneurial. I’ve had plenty of ideas, but haven’t bit the bullet and pulled the trigger to really hunt for a new career path.

Hopefully, with the help of this series I will get the inspiration and motivation to hone in exactly on where I need to be heading in my career. Join the ride, please!!

Jewelry Keepall

My taste in home accessories and fashion accessories seem be similar; classic style, but with an unexpected and/or quirky twist. A classic and clean line clutch, but in a neon color or bold abstract print.

So, when I saw this unique footed bowl and footed vase by Dylan Kendall on Shopbop.com, I knew that I wanted them. I thought they would be great conversation pieces to have have in my living room and dining room. However, my sister/roomie said that they looked “too freaky”.

Now, these lovely pieces are now residing my bedroom. I haven’t found a place for the vase, yet. However, the rather large bowl has made a perfect catchall for my daily jewelry.
