Nightstand Books #1

Books have always been a love of mine, even when I stopped reading as much as I used to read. However, I always have a book within reach. For example, I usually have between 4-5 different books on my nightstand. Some of these books are books I’m currently reading, next in line to read, and books that I read for moments of motivation. So, I decided to share my current nightstand books.

The book I’m currently reading and almost done with is the Anti 9-5 Guide: Practical Career Advice for Women Who Think Out The Cube. That’s such a long title for a small book.  I’ve been slowly reading this book for the past few months. However, don’t let that deter you from thinking that this book sucks, because it’s pretty good. It gives straight the point tips and ideas on how you can break away from you everyday 9-5 job. This book is loaded with advice from different women who have been able to break out away from the cubicle life. I only have a couple of chapters left, but I think I’m actually going to try to finish this up by this weekend.

The book I’m looking forward into reading next is Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar. Although I haven’t cracked this book open yet, I’ve heard nothing but great things about this book. Cheryl Strayed, who writes the Dear Sugar advice column, includes her best advice from the column. I can’t wait to read this book.

The next book on my nightstand is The Whole 30: The 3-Day Guide to Total Health and Food Freedom. Probably seems a little weird to have a cookbook on your nightstand. Although this book is filled with Whole 30 recipes, it leads up to recipes with the necessary information you need to know in order to successful complete this program. I’m slowly reading this book, which explains why I haven’t fully started the Whole 30. Recently, I try to pick it up and read it a couple of times a week. The more I read it, the closer I get to being 100 percent into this lifestyle change. I’m trying to get there.

A book that I keep on my nightstand, but rarely pick up is Little Book of Mindfulness: 10 Minutes A Day to Less Stress, More Peace. This book is filled with simple practices you can do in your day to help remove stress from your day and replace it with peace. It’s such a nice to have within reach whenever you need to clear your mind.

Another book that is a staple on my nightstand, but only reach for occasionally is Joyce Meyer’s The Secret Power of Speaking God’s Word. I received this book back in the fall at my church’s women’s conference. Initially, I assumed it was a book to read.  However, actually, it’s a resource book filled with scriptures for various topics. This book has been a crutch for me on a couple of occasions.

Finally, we have made it to The 48 Laws of Power, which I’ve had for years now. This book is meaty and meant to digest, which is what I’ve been doing over the past couple of years. Filled with observations from history, this book is manual for anyone looking to gain more control and power in their lives. Everyone I know who has read this book agrees, that this book is meant for you to read and absorb. It has moments of ruthlessness, manipulation, and callousness, but also informative and thought provoking. Keep in mind that I’ve only read half of it, but so far so good.
