On the edge

When it starts to get hot and humid, one the first things that disappears is the smoothness in my edges and that’s exactly what they started to do a couple of weeks ago. So, that lead me to purchase 3 hair products for smoothing edges/hairline. I didn’t buy them all on the same day, but I needed to try something.

So, here are three items that I recently bought to help keep my edges slick, shiny, and resistant towards sweat. Keep reading for more and pictures.

Here’s the background, a couple of summers ago I bought a stick like product on the spur of the moment at a local drugstore and loved it! It continuously gave me slicked down edges for the last two summers and smelled incredible while doing so, but when I went to grab it a few weeks ago it was practically empty and the print faded off the container. I forgot who made it and the name of it, but I referred to it as the “slick stick”. So, I needed to find a substitute until I could find my beloved “slick stick”.

The first thing I decided to try was a product I found at my beauty supply store. It’s from Black n’ Sassy (ugh, I hate that name!) and it’s their Style Smoother pomade. The reason I decided to get this one is because on the jar it claims it’s humidity resistant and alcohol-free. I was sold! It did withstand the humidity. However, I don’t like the cheap potpurri smell and like most pomades, I didn’t like creamy, but thick consistency. It does a good job at keeping my hairline smooth, but I wasn’t happy. So, the search continued.

A couple of days later, I was wondering around the beauty aisles at the Walgreens near my job and saw and bought this Olive Oil Edge Control by Organic Root Stimulator. As soon as I got back to my desk I cracked it open and tested it out. Now, unlike the Style Smoother, this one has a nice soft smell. Although it’s also thick, it melts into the hairline while smoothing the edges. So, I figured that this would be the one and was happy to say so!

As you might have read, this past weekend I attended the Sisterhood Showcase here in Memphis and practically every black hair care line had a booth. On Saturday, I didn’t go down the aisle that most of the hair care lines were stationed, because I felt like I’d seen them all. However, on the last day we decided to walk through just to say we did and what was the first thing I saw and almost shed a few happy tears for? I saw my “slick stick”! It’s from Luster’s Renutrients line and it’s called…Slick Stick! I was right and so happy! I think I might have ran to the lady. I bought one and the shine polisher from the same line. I felt so complete when I walked away from there. It sculpts, it smooths, and its my best friend this summer. Now, I can truly say…I’m happy!

Now that I have my Slick Stick back, I decided to keep the ORS one in my desk draw at work and I will probably give the Style Smoother to my sister. The Slick Stick? Oh, it will stay perched on the soap dish in my bathroom until I send it off to hibernation in the fall and winter.

  1. thanks for the review on the black and sassy (I dont like the name much either… too many stereotypes). i heard it is comparable to the miss jessies curly pudding, and I would love to buy that but it is out of my price range. I just finished twisting my hair yesterday, and need something to keep it from getting frizzy

    1. GREAT! I’m so glad you received it, because I always get nervous that the post office will lose stuff when I mail it! lol

Also, my brother’s GF just got sister locs and I gave her the Black and Sassy and she loves it! A small amount is all she needs and it stays smooth for days!

    1. No its not drying. Well, not to me or her.
However, here’s a natural hair tip. When looking for gels, look for water-based ones. Gels that are alcohol based will dry your hair SUPER QUICK! Natural hair loves water based products! This might be hard to believe, but Ampro gels are now water based and I believe they have a few products for twists and dreads that are water based.

Let's discuss....
