SKIN BALM: Why You Need One

Over the past few months, my skin has been going through it! First, winter did not come to play to year, because we had cold, rigid temps and multiple snow falls. Plus, the cold temperatures acted like they didn’t want to leave. My poor skin got so dry and I was going through all the products that had that claimed to “moisturize” and/or “hydrate”. Now, they did do all that, but I needed to one extra step to make sure they worked – a skin balm.

Personally, for many reasons, I think everyone needs a skin balm in their personal skincare arsenal. The first reason that you may need a skin balm is if your skin tends to get drier in the winter and hard to hold moisture. Once you apply your moisturizer, you can apply a thin layer of a creamy skin balm to help seal the moisture and protect your skin barrier. At night, you can use a thicker one to help seal the moisture and your nightly skincare products. A few months ago, this became a skincare trend known as slugging. Finally, a skin balm helps protect and heal your skin, which is ideal for people with sensitive skin.

Speaking of skincare products, sometimes we can find ourselves going a little overboard with products with actives. This recently happened to me to me when I introduced a retinol into my skincare routine. So, for a couple of days, I had to use a simple skincare routine that was free of active ingredients. Once I was done, I slathered my skin with Aquaphor to help seal and help skin. I use Aquaphor at night in place of a skin oil when I’m have some skin irritations and/or healing acne.

Although the Aquaphor is my go-to skin balm to help to repair or repair my skin barrier, I recently picked up the Avene’ Tolerance Control Soothing Skin Balm. Unlike Aquaphor, which is similar to Vaseline, this is balm is more creamy. I just started using it last week because I started skin cycling (more on that on another day) and my forehead was feeling very dry. This helped heal and moisturize my skin in less than 2 days. Needless to say, this has been a great addition to my skincare arsenal so far.

If you want a “clean” option, REN Evercalm Overnight Recovery Balm is a really good option. I tried a deluxe sample of this a while ago and it was really good – same texture of Vaseline but so soothing. It was like a final rub down for your face after a long day of dry and/or tired skin. Totally worth the money, in my opinion.

When all else fails, you can always just use a little scoop of your favorite petroleum jelly. The classics never go out of style!
