WEEKEND AT HOME: Investing In Myself and Future

WAH_investinme_books

This might be the last weekend of the year that doesn’t involve me having to run around shopping for Christmas gifts, holiday parties, and other holiday related situations.

Although the year is not over, yet, I have already decided what’s the main thing I want to focus on next year; ME! I have spent the last couple of years trying to be a “good” person by helping others out when they needed it hoping/expecting that it will come back to me. It was a gamble in faith that I still will do. However, I’ve learned the hard way that I also need to try and be there for me, too. It’s not being selfish, but being smart.

One thing that I’ve been putting on the back burner for too long is creating a little side business that I’ve been itching to do, but kept telling myself that I don’t have time or the right “things” in place. However, that was just a scapegoat that the “reasonable and responsible inner me” used to defer my dreams.

That is all changing, because I’m in go mode, but, as usual, “reasonable and responsible inner me” has to do the research and set up to-do lists and what better way than to read and listen to other driven women, which is what I’m doing this weekend.

The first book up is one that has been on my nightstand for over a year, where it has collected dust, drink rings, and make-up smears. By Invitation Only: How We Built Gilt and Changed the Way Millions Shop is by the business savvy women behind online sample sale site, Gilt.com. So far, it’s a really good and motivational read. It has really put that bug in me that I should take the chance now.

After I finish the Gilt book, I plan to read Barbara Corcoran’s Shark Tales: How I Turned $1,000 into a Billion Dollar Business and Barbara Stanny Secrets of Six-Figure Women. The latter is not just for me to getting a better understanding of a business, but more so about my current career ambitions.

For those of you not in the loop about me away from this blog don’t know much about me. Well, I have a B.A in Internet Journalism from the University of Memphis and I’m current a content developer for a medical software company, where I also participate in the online marketing for the company. However, I’ve been feeling the itch to focus more on online marketing and less on technical and development of content. So, I’m gearing to spread my wings and figure out exactly what road to take to get where I want and need to be. So, hopefully, I will get a better understanding about my ambitions soon.

Anyway, that’s what I plan to do this weekend…prepare myself for greatness!

LUST-HAVE LIST: November 2013

LHL_november2013

Halloween is pretty much the doormat to the holiday season. Now, we are entering into November for Thanksgiving and then Christmas will be right around the corner, because December tends to run up to you real quick with a sucker punch.

This month, I’m starting to gravitate more black fashion pieces rather than brown and you will be able to see it in this month’s LHL. Plus, now that the sweaty summer is over, I’m starting to take some extra time in the morning to do my makeup instead of just some undereye concealer, mascara, and powder. So, I’m starting to visit makeup counters more frequently and test drive new products. Also, I need some new make-up brushes, because mine are starting to shed. Ugh.

Not to mention, but I’ve been feeling a little nostalgia toward my junior high days of being obsessed with Memphis rap and bucket bag purses.

So, here are the things I’m lusting for this month!

  1. Eightball and MJG T-Shirt, $13.99, Blahblahtshirts.com
  2. Rachel Zoe Kye Drawstring Bag, $315.99, Piperlime.com
  3. Origins Smarty™ Plants CC SPF 20 Complexion Corrector, $35, Sephora
  4. Vince Sonia High Heel Booties, $475, ShopBop.com
  5. Make An Entrance Clutch, $59, Sephora

Weekend At Home: Perfecting My Bar

WAH_silver_bar

For over a year, I’ve been trying to create a bar area that’s pleasantly stocked. I think that a bar area in your home is very inviting…to most. Personally, I’m a social drinker, but there are a couple of times a week that I find myself partaking in a glass of wine to unwind from a long day at work.

This week, my sister and I are moving to a cute little house we are renting and one of the first things I’m going to tackle is setting up a bar. Although, neither of us are “drinkers”, we do socialize with some and host most group get-togethers at our place. So, we try to keep some “spirits” for visitors.

Typically, when it comes to metal in fashion or home decor, I like to go gold. However, for the bar, I’m really feeling a silver and glass with touches of black theme. I love the sleek and modern feel of the look. Plus, my dining room furniture is black and a silver bar area will compliment each other nicely and allow me to add an accent color of my choice, per season.

So, here are some items I’m pondering to help build my silver-lining bar area.

  1. Oeniphilia 6 Bottle Wall Mounted Wine Rack, $43.32, Walmart
  2. Stainless-Steel Bar Tools Set with Stand, $89.95, Williams-Sonoma
  3. Mikasa Cheers Set of 4 Glass Bottle Stoppers, $25, Amazon.com
  4. Oggi Stainless Steel Double Wall Ice Bucket, $29.99, Target
  5. Luigi Bormioli ‘Rossini’ Decanter, $40, Nordstrom
  6. Dorset Cocktail Shaker, $119.95, Williams-Sonoma
  7. Bristol Bar Cabinet, $549, JC Penney
  8. Stainless Steel Cocktail Glasses, $19.99, Target
  9. Metallic Print Glassware Set, $34, West Elm
