LINKAGE LOVE: March 13, 2015

Linkage_love_03_2015

Isn’t weird that after a gazillion years, Friday the 13th is still “a thing”? I love that no matter how old or knowledgeable you get, Friday the 13th will always have just a slight surge of eeriness around it. So, tonight, I think I’m going to pop some corn, lounge on the sofa and watch a few Friday the 13th movies, but not the remakes from the last few years. Why were those made? Technology and gore doesn’t always make better horror films! Let me stop, because I could go on and on about how classic horror movies remakes are crappy and that’s not why I’m here right now.

Back to business. Recently, I decided that there was no better time than the present to start exploring and following my passions and start the journey to create my own business. So, I’ve been prepping my mind by reading as many articles, blog posts, and books that peak my interest about starting, curating, and marketing a business, as possible. The crazy thing is that the more I read, the more inspired I get. I even get inspired when I read about the difficulties and failures that you are bound to hit. However, as the old saying goes, “Failing to Plan, is Planning to Fail.” Strong words, right there my friends.

So, in this month’s Linkage Love (I guess this is going to be “a thing”, too.) you might see some links that are reflective of this new path to entrepreneurship that I’m embarking on sprinkled throughout. Who knows, maybe one of these posts will tickle that idea that you’ve been wanting to do for a while, but didn’t know where to begin or found the motivation. Still, there are some non-business/blogging posts. too. So, keep reading and enjoy!

Finding Your Strength

strength_finder_book_main

In my current journey to living the life I want and destined to have, I’ve been focused on my unearthing my passion and strengths. Some people tend to focus more on their weaknesses, by either trying to strengthen it or dwell in it. Even I’m guilty of doing this myself, deep in my heart and mind, I knew that wasn’t the right area to focus. However, I didn’t know how to find, focus and increase my strengths.

So, when I saw Strength Finder 2.0, it instantly spoke to me and urged me to  buy it.

To help people uncover their talents, Gallup introduced the first version of its online assessment, StrengthsFinder, in the 2001 management book Now, Discover Your Strengths.

Loaded with hundreds of strategies for applying and finding your strengths, the book is set up as follow:

    StrengthsFinder: The Next Generation
(A short introduction explaining the need for the enhanced edition of the test based upon new thinking and research in strengths psychology)

  • I: Finding Your Strengths
(A 30-page overview of strengths psychology and how the Gallup system works)

  • II. The StrengthsFinder (www.StrengthFinder.com)
(If you haven’t taken it before, the code to take the test is provided in a packet inside the book. You actually have to buy the book to take the test)

  • III: Applying Your Strengths
(After getting the results from your online assessment, there are 150 pages outlining each of the 34 themes including what people with that strength look like, how to manage them, and ideas for action if you have that strength).

This book is an easy read with informative and information that creates a guiding light to the path you need to find and focus on your personal strengths to, ultimately, lead you to the life you want and deserve.

Books I Want To Read

books_to_read_before_2015

I was doing an awesome job fighting off a horrible cold my sister was “trying” to give me. However, the bipolar weather and sick co-workers finally broke through my barrier and I was sick all last week. I’m almost back to myself. I’ll say that I’m at 95% pre-sick. So, yay for that!

Last week, I actually took a couple of days offs to rest and I used that time to catch up on some books that have been piled up on my nightstand for a while. Now, I need some more books, because I’m back into reading…obsessively.

So, I’ve finally narrowed down the next books I want to attack with a reading vengeance.  A couple are books I’ve been meaning to read based on the reviews, one is a book that I started reading, but stopped and now I can’t find it. Therefore, I need to buy it again. The others just peaked my interest, but all of them are self-help/motivational books.

I’ve been trying to map out my 2015 and I’m aiming to enter next year prepared and eager to seize the life I want. So, here are the books I want to buy and read next.

  • Good to Great by Jim Collins
  • You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero
  • The 4 Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferriss
  • 52 Ways to Live a Kick Ass Life by Andrea Owen
  • The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

I’m open for other suggestions. So, if you have any, leave them around!

Weekend At Home: Movies to Binge Watch

Now that football season is about to take over my TV tomorrow, I feel like this is going to be my last weekend, day actually, to watch some of my favorite and classic movies. As you can tell, I have a nice mixture of comedy, drama, musicals, and continuous classics.  Looking for some movies to add to your watch list? Well, here are a few to get you going:

  • Clueless – It’s hard to believe that this movie is almost 20 years old! Maybe, it’s because some of the fashion trends from the movie (hello, knee socks and oxfords) are coming back for fall. Also, I’m sure the fact that Iggy Izalea was inspired by the movie to to create teh video for the most popular song of the summer, didn’t hurt.
  • The Wedding Planner – A super cute, slightly cheesy, movie featuring Jennifer Lopez as detail-obsessed and single wedding planner who fall for the groom of one of the weddings she’s planning. Yeah…awkward.
  • Bridesmaids – One of the funniest movies EVER! It’s just awesome all up and through it and I practically watch it every time I see that it’s on.
  • The Little Mermaid – This movie brings back so many good and nostalgic feels from my childhood. In the late 80s early 90s, this was the headline movie for slumber parties all over the country. If you had popcorn, pajamas, and The Little Mermaid on VHS, your slumber party was an automatic A+. The adult version is gourmet popcorn, candy flavored vodka, VS sleepwear, and The Little Mermaid on Blu-ray. Still a A+, just a little tipsy. It helps the feelings you need to bring when you sing each song out long…despite your neighbors’ wishes.
  • West Side Story – When I think of amazing musicals, this is it! The story of love struck teens from different sides (and gang affiliations) want to be together, despite the wishes of their friends and loved ones. The story, the dancing, the music, and tears makes this one of my favorite movies of all time.
  • Imitation of Life – This is my mom’s favorite movie, which explains why it’s my favorite movie. The first time I saw it, I only saw the last 5 minutes of it, which if you’ve ever seen it, you know that was too emotional to not want to watch all of it. This movie will tap on so many emotions, good and bad, but you feel so warm inside. All of the feels are too much and too strong. Just make sure you are in reach when watching this movie.

Did you see any of your favorites? Have any suggestions? Leave them below!
