Creating Consistent Creativity

consitent creativity

Creativity. Everyone has it and believe it or not, everyone uses it. However, some of us need to use it more than others and with more strength, but we all have creativity. Unfortunately, consistent creativity is a whole other story.

For me, I feel the need and desire to be creative during the work week. When I’m at my cushy 9-5 as a content developer for medical software company, I usually have all these ideas floating around that scribble down in my daily journal and/or prep a blog post about them in my editorial calendar. On the weekend, my creative juices run so dry. I can’t recall the last time I got an idea to create a graphic design (I’m starting to freelance graphic/logo designs, again) for client or interesting blog post to write on a weekend.

My weekends are pretty chill and uneventful for the most part and I love it. I thrive on rest and minimal responsibilities on the weekend other than doing a little “whatever” on Saturdays, church on Sunday morning, and relaxing on my sofa for the rest of the time. It’s so great. Thankfully, I can say that this is my “formula” for creating and churning out ideas and content about 90% of the time.

However, for those times when I just can’t seem to find my mojo to create, I have a few things I try. At least one of these do the trick. So, I decided to share

SUGGESTIONS FOR CONSISTENT CREATIVITY:

  • Get “UNcomfortable” – Being in an uncomfortable or familiar spot can cause use to get more creative than ever, because we are forced to think of something different. A couple of weeks ago, I decided that I would do the Daniel fast, which is pretty much having a plant-based diet with no meat, dairy, or sugar. I’ve only been doing it for a few days, but it has caused me to learn about new ways to seek nutritional fulfillment and experiment with different foods and spices. It’s been very interesting and has peaked my interest learning more about the production of food.
  • Be Different – Being different is so cool…if you ever try it. Pick up a book about something you’ve never been interested in reading about. Visit that raw vegan restaurant that you could never pick over your beloved steakhouse. You never know how something can help you unless you try it. While in the book store, I pick up random books about different religions, architecture, or anything that I don’t have much knowledge. Once a book on hatmaking inspired me to design one of my favorite designs of a beautiful afro covered in glitter. I wish I could find that picture right now.
  • Solo Mini Trip – Taking a quick little road trip for a weekend getaway or week long trip overseas will create a spark to interest you while exploring a new place and interacting with new people. If you don’t have the time or funds to travel far, dedicate an afternoon to cruising around your city and stop in random shops and restaurants that never knew exist. FYI – this has become one of my favorite lazy weekend activities.
