hair milk

Since I got my ends trimmed and hair dyed to my natural dark brown a couple of months ago, I have been embracing and wearing my natural curls more. This also caused me to look into trying more products for curly hair, which lead me to stumble back into some of the products I used when I first went natural many years. One of the first products I tried that made me love my natural curls was Carol’s Daughter’s Hair Milk. Since I haven’t used it in years, I decided that I would revisit it while I’m all in love with my curls again.

Awhile back, I shared some beauty products that are designed for you to use overnight. In that post, I included a couple of overnight hair treatments, but I not that many. So, let’s discuss overnight hair treatments just a little bit more.

Most overnight hair treatments are used to help moisturize and strengthen your hair while you sleep. As someone with thick, color-treated, naturally curly hair, I put always treat my hair with something that’s moisturizing. One of the simplest treatments you can add to your hair is to add oils to your hair and scalp at night. The types of oils you use depends on your hair type. I usually massage coconut oil on my hair and add a little tea tree oil to my scalp at night, which my hair loves. However, sometimes your hair can appreciate a little more ingredients from a products that created to help treat your hair overnight. That’s when it’s time to look into an overnight hair treatment.

Protect Your Hair From Sun Damage

protect hair from sun damage

I’m a firm believer in taking the necessary precautions to protect my skin from the sun by religiously applying sunscreen to my face and body before I expose it to the sun to protect it from UV rays. However, some people tend to overlook the fact that it’s just as important to protect hair from sun damage just as much as protecting your skin.

The best way to protect your hair from sun damage is to use products that are designed to do just that; protect your hair from sun damage. Therefore, you should look for and use hair products that contain UVB and UVA protection.

Favorite Co-Wash Products

Now that it’s warming up, it’s time I give my flat iron a break and rock my head full of thick and natural curls. However, my flatiron isn’t the only thing moving to the back of my beauty closet, because my shampoo usually goes with it. Yes, it’s time to break out my co-wash products.

What is a “co-wash”, you may be wondering”? Well, co-wash is short for conditioner wash and it’s the go-to method for curly hair ladies to cleanse their hair without stripping it of any moisture from shampoos. Some people may be shocked to know that conditioners have enough ingredients to clean your scalp, but without all the ingredients that suds up your hair. The ingredients that causes shampoo to lather and suds are the usual culprits that strips your hair of its natural oils and moisture.

When I first started researching how to maintain my naturally curly hair, co-washing was one of the first things I incorporated into my life. The conditioner of choice for me back then was Suave Coconut conditioner, because it did a great job at cleaning my scalp and moisturizing my hair. Plus, it was super cheap and super effective. That was also the first time I discovered my hair’s BFF, coconut oil. What a time.

However, a lot has changed in the past 10 years. Now there are more brands that create products exclusively for curly and wavy hair. Also, some of the mainstream brands have created lines for us curly hair girls, too. Therefore, most (if not all) of these lines include a product that is exclusively designed to co-wash your hair. Some have added and/or removed certain ingredients that allow you to thoroughly clean your scalp and hair, but without stripping process. Curls need all the moisture it can get at all levels of their hair regimen.

If you are having a hard time moisturizing your thick, wavy, and/or curly hair, you might want to embrace co-washing. It’s one of the best things I’ve done for my hair.

Co-Wash Products To Try

  • DevaCurl No-Poo Decadence Cleanser – Devacurl products has become of my favorite brands, especially their Decadence line. My current go-to co-wash product is their One Condition Decadence Conditioner, but their new No-Poo Decedence Milk Cleanser is amazing. I just tried it this past weekend and I was floored with my results.
  • dpHUE Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse – Before co-wash products, us curly hair chicks would use apple cider vinegar to help clean our scalp of product build-up. Now, there’s an ACV rinse that also infused with oils and other moisturizing ingredients.
  • Pantene Pro-V Color Preserve Cleansing Conditioner – This is a great product for us curly girls who dye our hair. This co-wash cleanses and conditions without stripping your hair of moisture or color.
  • Shea Moisture Superfruit Multivitamin Conditioning Wash – My sister’s hair is more wavy than curly and this is the only product she uses when she just wants to wash her hair and go. It’s really gentle and moisturizing. Plus, it’s another great product to use is you have color-treated curls.

SCALP CARE: Scalp Treatments and Products

scalp-care-treatments-and-products

Want longer and stronger hair? Take care of your scalp. It’s that easy. Fortunately, there are a number of scalp treatments and products on the market to help.

When it comes to growing out your hair or just a trying to grow a little more length, it all begins with having a clear and clean scalp. When we use products on our hair, they slide and glide all over the place before finally settling on our scalp. Product residue builds up and causes our scalps to get oily and clogged up, which slowly prevents our hair from growing.

So, just like when our body and/or skin feels bloated after consuming too much of something (i.e food, alcohol), we do a detox to help purge all the gook and junk from our system so we can continue to prosper. Well, our scalp and hair could also benefit from a detox. By using scalp treatments and products, we can get our hair growing and prospering all over the place, too!

If you are more into a natural technique, my favorite D.I.Y mixture that only uses a little olive oil (to moisturize), baking soda (to exfoliate), and cinnamon (to increase circulation). It’s a real no-fuss, no-mess recipe that I do a couple times a months to give my scalp a breath of fresh air. I must admit that I have noticed some extra length and strength in my hair since I started using it a couple of months ago. The recipe and instructions are below.

SCALP DETOX RECIPE:

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 teaspoon on cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar (optional)

Directions:

  1. Apply generous amount of the mixture to your scalp
  2. Use your fingertips (or scalp massage) to massage your scalp in a circular motion
  3. Gently pile hair on top of your head and place shower cap on your head for 10-15 minutes
  4. Wash and condition hair as usual
  5. Rinse scalp and hair with apple cider vinegar to remove itchy/dry scalp causing bacteria.

*If you have a sensitive scalp, I recommend you consult with your dermatologist before trying any of these products of treatments.
